How to install Ubuntu in the best conditions

Unlike many other information sources, we do not encourage an automation of all the installation steps of Ubuntu which often lead to libraries conflicts.

Following the guide below, and without any materiel problem, you should obtain an operational Ubuntu with all the available video tools.

:-) This guide is suitable to Dapper 6.06, Edgy 6.10, Feisty 7.04, Gutsy 7.10, Hardy 8.04, and Intrepid 8.10 versions

Please note that a special Ubuntu appliance, called Ubuntu-studio, contains all the tools necessary for multimedia activities.

Step 1 : Installation with Official Ubuntu CD-rom

  • Install your Ubuntu with an official CD-rom is advised, or with an image of a CD-rom downloaded here :

  • Which version to choose ?
ubuntu 8.04.1 « Hardy Heron » is advised. It is a LTS version (long term support), which is strong and tried and tested, and which wiil be suitable for fields where reliability is necessary.
Avoid updating during installation, at the end of the installation, get the CD-rom back, then start your newly installed Ubuntu again.

Step 2 : Configure a reliable updating file

  • Launch a terminal with Applications/accessories and become root (=super-administrator) with command :
sudo su + password
  • Execute this saving commande of your updating file with :
cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old
  • Edit the sources.list file with :
gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
wget -q http://fr.packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | apt-key add -
  • Launch the updating of the software lists on distant servers with command:
apt-get update

Step 3 : Install software and updating

  • Open your paquets installation software synaptic in System/Administration/Network, and look for software you need.
